Pros and Cons of Aluminium and uPVC Bifold Doors

Cost and longevity

Although aluminium bifold doors require more upfront costs than uPVC ones, aluminium bifold doors are longer lasting and typically come with a manufacturer’s guarantee of up to 15 years.

What’s more, aluminium bifold doors have a lifespan of up to 45 years, whereas uPVC bifold doors last no more than 30 years on average.

Durability and maintenance

Whilst both materials are very durable, uPVC bifold doors will require more maintenance and cleaning than their aluminium equivalent. Specialist products are required for uPVC bifold doors so that they can be regularly cleaned to remove dirt and grime that can get engrained in the plastic. By contrast, aluminium bifold doors will not require such a level of upkeep.

House sale appeal

If you’re considering selling your house at some point in the future, then you should know that aluminium bifold doors are likely to be more attractive to prospective buyers because of their high quality and durability. uPVC bifold doors on the other hand can’t offer the same appeal.

Strength and security

We are fully aware of the need to make your property as safe and secure as possible. This holds especially true when it comes to the rear of your property, which is typically where you’ll find bifold doors, so it’s paramount that your bifold doors can’t be penetrated by any unwanted guests.

Whilst both materials will keep your property secure, aluminium is stronger than uPVC. Plus, Alimax’s aluminium bifold doors are PAS 24 certified and feature a multi-lock mechanism to enhance safety and security.

Heat and light tolerance

Aluminium bifold doors are more thermally efficient than uPVC ones. Aluminium is a material that is incredibly heat and light resistant, meaning it is less prone to thermal expansion.

This contrasts with uPVC doors, which expand roughly 2.5 times more than their aluminium counterparts. This will pose a problem during the hotter seasons as these doors will be harder to close – they may need to cool down or need extra force applied to shut.

Our recommendation – should you opt for Aluminium or uPVC Bifold Doors?

Based on our review, we thoroughly recommend aluminium bifold doors for your property. They’re a great long-term investment with resell appeal whilst also providing you with the safety and security that you need.
